Maps and Legends

This week we are concluding our first History unit: Getting Around our Great Big World. Ask your child to sing the continents song to you, tell you the names of the oceans, and to tell you our "North, South, East, and West" rhyme! Today, we learned about Legends on maps and the purposes they serve. Then, we colored our own maps of an imaginary town according to what the symbols on the legend meant.

First Grade Buddies

Our first graders really love being "buddies" to our Kindergartners and helping them out with their work.

Nouns

This week we reviewed nouns and also began differentiating between common and proper nouns. As a cloze activity on Friday, we made a class list of nouns and classified them by whether they were people, places, or things. Then, we use tri-folded paper to write and illustrate examples.

Small Group Work

This year in multiage, we are working in small groups a lot. This really gives us teachers a lot of time to focus on the individual needs of each child. Here is a glimpse of what our small math groups looked like on Friday.

Pizza, Please!

Next week we will begin our project work. Our first project theme is called "Pizza, Please!" We will use this theme in a cross-curricular way, emcompassing literacy, writing, math, social studies, and science skills. As a precursor to the unit, I asked the students to tell me what they know about pizza.
